Job Role & Responsibilities
The Medical Coder will be responsible for accurate and compliant assignment of medical codes across multiple specialties and encounter types.
Key responsibilities include:
- Performing Emergency Department (ED) facility coding in compliance with US healthcare guidelines
- Handling Evaluation & Management (E/M) coding for outpatient and inpatient encounters
- Assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes accurately based on clinical documentation
- Managing Inpatient DRG (IP DRG) coding with strong understanding of MS-DRG guidelines
- Handling Denials coding and supporting appeal documentation
- Ensuring coding accuracy, productivity, and quality benchmarks
- Staying updated with annual coding guideline changes and payer-specific rules
- Supporting internal audits and quality improvement initiatives
These roles directly support accurate reimbursement, compliance, and revenue integrity for healthcare providers.
Eligibility / Qualifications
Educational & Certification Requirements
- CPC or equivalent medical coding certification is mandatory
Relevant courses include:
BSc Life Sciences, BSc Nursing, BSc Allied Health Sciences, BPharm, MPharm, Diploma in Medical Coding, Health Information Management
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of relevant medical coding experience
- Proven experience in ED facility coding, E/M OP/IP, IP DRG, or Denials coding
Skill Requirements
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- In-depth understanding of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding standards
- Familiarity with payer policies and denial management workflows
- High attention to detail and compliance standards
- Good communication and documentation skills
